Tasting Note

A brooding deep garnet in colour with youthful and classic cabernet aromas of mint, violets, savoury dry herbs and briary hedgerow fruits, all spiced with a touch of mocha and toasted oak. The palate is a bag of bramble fruits – red currants, mulberries, plums, blackberries and blueberries, all supple and rich. This ambling fruit power is bridled by an ample swathe of fine fruit tannins, well assisted by the finest grained French oak.

Cannot fail to impress alongside a slow roasted leg of lamb studded with garlic and a rosemary gravy.

  • I will start this note with the bad news – it’s always the best way. 2014 Leston Cabernet Sauvignon and 2016 Miamup Chardonnay are not going to make it to the UK this year. But, on the flipside, it will ensure that we all genuinely will celebrate a Happy New Year when they arrive. I tasted these two wines back in January and I did a metaphorical backflip such was their class. But not to worry, because there are more than enough wines from this excellent winery to keep us amused in the meantime. My featured wine is yet another example of Margaret River’s burgeoning prowess in the ‘everyday Cabernet’ field. There was once a time when all of the famous, big, brooding wines ruled the roost and the second or even third wines looked skinny, leafy and green. This is fast becoming a distant memory I am delighted to report. 2014 Miamup Cabernet is glossy, sexy and juicy and there are no green edges in evidence in this wine. It is simply superb and it shouts Margaret River with every molecule in its being. Of course, the principal Cabernet in the portfolio, 2013 Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon is sublime this year. I gave this a rare 19/20 in my notes and this brings it up to the same level as a handful of stellar wineries in the country. I cannot recommend this wine enough and it is worth noting that in spite of its youth this is a stunningly balanced wine with some of the finest, powdery tannins imaginable. Two whites really stood out, too, starting with the 2015 Chardonnay Great Southern / Margaret River. This is a turbo-lemony cuvée with superb, perfumed patisserie kissed
oak and for that reason it is the flavour equivalent of the River Café’s famous lemon tart only in vinous form. The ice cool 2016 Mount Barker Riesling Great Southern is another treat, proving that South Australia cannot have all of the Riesling plaudits to itself! Cool sensual, powdery and holistic this wine has mountain stream freshness at its core and it is so uplifting and cleansing it will realign your chakra if you give it permission.
