Tasting Note

Luscious aroma of cherries and rosehips, tinged with exotic lilies and alluring spice. Slight anise and leather character. Silky-soft, light texture yet complete and absolutely the way it should be. With bright acidity and very gentle tannin, this possesses the ethereal combination of delicacy, freshness and substantial intensity of flavour. Delicious.

The vineyard name originates from the surrounding water bodies. Its greater exposure to the north, west and east limits the vigour of the vines, while the sandier soil reduces water stress compared to Ferrous and Haven. These factors combine to make the wine silken, perfumed and approachable when young, as well as having flavour concentration and ageing potential.

Winemaking

100% destemmed and fermented in open vats without innoculation.Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new) Kooyong is located on the Mornington Peninsula at Tuerong and focuses on producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wine; which are both suited to the Peninsula's cool maritime climate. Kooyong is a 'domain' in the true sense of the word and the wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit at its own on-site winery.

Press

  • 96/100 - The most refined pinot, perhaps. Ferrous, the Gevrey; this, the Chambolle, for lack of better comparison. Sappy, crunchy and finessed across a red fruited weave of a mineral thread, this lovely wine offers a long caress across the palate. Nothing out of place.

    • James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2019
    • Ned Goodwin MW
  • 95/100 - With a full red to brick red colour, the bouquet is savoury, earthy and slightly meaty, while the palate is supple and fruit-sweet, soft and harmonious with cherry fruit and toasty oak intermingling. It needs and responds well to aeration.

    • 100 Top New Releases
  • 94/100 - A beautifully complex mix of dark cherry, high quality oak and spice leads into a linear palate showing bright wild cherry flavours guided along by fine fleshy tannins. Balance, intensity and length with some lovely mineral notes to wrap things up.
