Ramón Bilbao

Ramón Bilbao is one of the most admired wine producers in Spain, with vineyards in Rioja, La Mancha, Galicia, Ribero del Duero, Navarra and Rueda. Established in 1924, Ramón Bilbao produces a comprehensive range of wines including Rioja Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Albarino from high-altitude sites.

Founded by Ramón Bilbao Murga in 1924, two years before the formation of the Designation of Origin and Regulatory Council in Rioja which classified the finest vineyard sites of the region, Bodega Ramón Bilbao now boasts over 200 hectares of vineyards in Rioja – the majority in the best sites of the Rioja Alta. These vineyards, planted between 1930 and 2005, are located at singular sites and many at high altitudes. Bodegas Ramón Bilbao, create their own unique classical expression of the Rioja Alta terroirs, revisioning classic ingredients like Tempranillo and oak wood to produce rich, vibrant and delicious wines. Vines are grown at higher altitudes to produce fresher wines, which are not filtered or clarified, retaining classic stylistic nuances. Where wines are matured in oak, barrels are a maximum of 5 years old, lightly toasted, and of American and French origin. The aim is to define a fresh and elegant style, producing fruitier wines in which the character of the grape is fully expressed, rather than hidden behind an excess of wood. In 2016, Ramón Bilbao opened a bodega in Finca Las Almedas, Rueda, one of Spain's most iconic and internationally renowned designations of origin. Here, at Finca Las Amedias, 770m above sea-level, hot continental summers and cold winters make the perfect climate for growing crisp Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc.

The legacy of Ramón Bilbao is kept today by a talented team of winemakers headed by Rodofo Bastida, and in 2014, Ramón Bilbao was crowned the Best Spanish Producer by the IWSC. Further, in 2019, the winery was named by Drinks International as one of the most Admired Wine Brands in the World.

Sustainability is a priority at Ramón Bilbao. A third-generation family business, the winery has made commitments in response to climate change, putting it on the path towards being a conscious company, taking responsibility for its impact on the planet, and making changes to ensure future generations will enjoy a much more sustainable world. A number of Ramón Bilbao wines are now 100% Organic. Ramón Bilbao’s operations are powered entirely by renewable energy, and steps have been taken to reduce water consumption - including construction of a dedicated water treatment plant which redirects recycled wastewater onto vineyards. To increase biodiversity in the vineyards and reduce reliance on artificial fertilisers, sheep provide natural fertiliser for vines and, in Rueda, wooden nests have been built to encourage native goshawks to nest.
