Tasting Note

I first encountered this on a foggy February day in Rioja - about as far away from rosé weather as you can get. And yet the wine's intricacy, finesse and balance impressed so much that, despite the less than conducive conditions, it struck me as possibly the finest rosé I had ever tasted. Somehow combining feather touch delicacy with enormous personality, it displays delicious juicy blush pear fruit, tempered by savoury bay leaf aromas, electric-bright acidity and a genuine impression of 'minerality'. Bone dry, yet with fabulous flavour intensity and sustain, this is a masterpiece. Bravo!

    — Tom King, Fine Wine Manager

Ramón Bilbao's Rodolfo Bastida says “you have to take rosé as seriously as you would a red or a white,” and it is clear from this wine that he really means it. Mature Garnacha vines planted at 600m above sea level give it intensity, complexity and the bright acidity that holds everything together.

Recognising the fantastic potential of high-altitude Garnacha from La Rioja Baja, Ramón Bilbao (located in La Rioja Alta) purchased 70 hectares of Garnacha vineyards at 600m above sea level. Lalomba is the first wine from these vineyards. Ageing in concrete 'eggs' adds greater complexity to the wine.

  • One of the best rosés I've tasted in a long time uses garnacha grown at altitude (600m above sea level) and has all the finesse, texture and length of a fine white: worth every penny.

  • From mature garnacha (grenache) vines planted on the Lalomba hillside, 700 metres above sea level on stony clay and limestone soils in the Rioja Alta region of Spain comes what Ramón Bilbao consider to be the jewel in their crown. “Rosés should just be as expressive of their provenance as reds and whites,” says chief winemaker Rodolfo Bastida and this pale blush rosé made from only perfect, hand-picked berries is exactly that. Orchard and red fruit flavours are tempered by mineral notes and an elegant acidity in a wine that’s as perfect as a sunny Spanish evening.

  • When Ramón Bilbao winemaker, Rodolfo Bastida, said, ‘You have to take rosé as seriously as you would a red or a white’, you know he is halfway to cracking the code. Bastida has taken note of the stellar wines emanating from Provence and he decided to make his very own version in Rioja. Lalomba uses 40-year-old Garnacha vines planted at 700 metres altitude on stony, clay-limestone soils, with the surrounding Mediterranean forests sheltering the vines from prevailing winds. Rodolfo handpicks the grapes and sorts them rigorously prior to ‘bleeding’ the pale colour from the skins. 40% of the yield is transferred to concrete eggs where it is left to settle, before undergoing a 20-day fermentation at temperatures below 15C. The top estates in Provence use old vine Grenache and cold fermentations so, give or take the ‘eggs’, the grape variety and method is similar... I would never have thought that Rioja could make rosé this classy, but with old vine Garnacha, the right site and the perfect attitude it has happened already. This is incredible news for us fans of elite rosé.

Customer Reviews

I came in earlier and one of the things I bought was the Lalomba Rioja Rosé wine. Frankly expensive, but it was thorougly recommended to me as being rather special, and my wife is just drinking it and I just wanted you to know that she thinks it’s SPECTACULAR! So you’re a star, it’s a success, sell it to lots of people. I love it! Thanks a lot.
