Tasting Note

Intense cherry colour in the glass. Beautifully seamless ripe blackberry and raspberry aroma, with very classy fine vanilla oak character.  In the mouth, this is silky and lithe; absolutely gorgeously delicious, neither heavy nor hefty yet with beautiful perfume and feather-touch tannin.  It is marvellous for its concentration married to delicacy.  Spectacular.  It could age for several years, but wow, it is so delicious right now.  Bravo!

There is an intriguing story behind this wine.  Before the French became involved in Rioja in the 19th Century, the traditional red winemaking method here (as it was in most of Spain) was by whole-bunch fermentation, incorporating at least a degree of 'carbonic maceration' - the method known most famously today for producing the vivid, forward fruit character of Beaujolais.  Sierra Cantabria's genius winemaker, Marcos Eguren, wanted to make his family's 'private collection' wine with a nod to this historic way of doing things, while incorporating the richness derived from more recent methods.  The result is breathtaking:  a combination of soaring fragrance and delicacy of texture with satisfying intensity and substance.

Winemaking

From the Valgrande and Jarrarte vineyards, totalling four hectares. Both located close to the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra at an elevation of between 460 and 480 metres. Soils are of calcareous clay; abundance of gravel and small rounded stones on surface. Vines are older than 50 years: Valgrande was planted in 1957 and Jarrarte in 1959. Cultivated organically and in an environmentally sustainable manner. Cropped at 35 hl/ha and strict hand picking of the bunches in perfect conditions of health and maturation. Second selection at the winery by means of a double sorting table. Vinified by combining conventionally-fermented, de-stemmed, crushed grapes with a whole-bunch ferment. Malolactic fermentation takes place in Bordelaise barrels, of which 50% are French and 50% American oak. Matured 18 months in cask before bottling.

Food Recommendation

Patatas a la Riojana - potato stew with peppers, chorizo, slow-cooked pork and paprika. Ewe's cheese, lamb shanks, moussaka.

Press

  • 95/100 - This is a spectacular red with dark berries and hints of violets and dried lavender. Full-bodied yet bright, racy and focused. Great wine. Drinkable now, but even better in 2020.

  • 94/100 - Like most of the wines from this vintage, the 2016 Colección Privada shows more freshness. It's a blend of two vinifications from two vineyards, one traditional and the other one carbonic maceration, and the wine matured in brand new oak barrels, half French oak and half American oak. It's explosive, as it combines the aromatic power of the year and the character of the wine, so it's super aromatic, full of strawberries and vanilla and explosion on the nose. It has tons of fruit and spices, a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins, with a bitter touch from the élevage that should be polished with a little more time in bottle. It should be one of the most expressive and showy vintages of Colección Privada; it's fresh and makes you salivate. Of course, you have to be a bit tolerant with oak, because there is oak here. I later read Parker's description of the 1996, and it sounded very much like this wine. 2016 seems to be a truly spectacular year that managed to provide quantity, and quality and perhaps the higher yields produced lighter wines that are very aromatic and elegant and come through as very expressive.
