Tasting Note

It’s a very pretty and lifted nose with fruit characters of fresh apple, mixed peel and rose petals with a spicy background of star anise, cinnamon sticks and a hint of white pepper. The palate is lively and floral with yellow citrus flowers, green mango and barley sugar. The acidity is linear and spans the whole palate balancing the natural sugar nicely. There are restrained mineral fruit tannins which add a lovely textural element.

Late harvesting took place by hand in small volumes when fruit flavours and the Botrytis
cinerea was at an optimal point. The grapes were gently crushed before receiving a small amount of skin contact. The juice was separated via the gentle process of basket pressing.
Fermentation occurred in a number of small tanks using neutral yeast to cope with the high natural sugar levels and to avoid dominating the fruit characters. The fermentation stopped naturally, retaining a considerable level of residual sugar.

  • GOLD MEDAL - ‘Beautiful aromatics, floral, honey, layers of intensity, treacle and toffee, with baked apple notes,’ began an impressed Mike Best of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, concluding: ‘The palate is a mouthwatering explosion of silky flavours.’ ‘Honeydew and orange zest, tasty but not overpowering,’ added consultant sommelier Maria Rodriguez. Not just for desserts, think also goats' cheese and vine tomatoes, said Roger Jones of The Harrow at Little Bedwyn.

  • No Christmas feast is complete without a glass of dessert wine or Port to match the Pud, or the stilton. This year, I'm opting for a deliciously fragrant, luscious dessert wine from Australia; a golden-hued nectar, to be sipped slowly and relished, it's called D'Arenberg the Noble Wrinkled Riesling. From southern Australia the unusual, but apt name reflects the style of the wine – the majestic Riesling grape produces some of the very finest sweet wines in the world, wines full of unctuous sweetness, but also imbued with wonderful freshness and citrus acidity, which means that these wines stay fresh and will last for years. At the risk of being technical the grapes used for these wines are left on the vines long after the main harvest and are affected by something called 'noble rot' - not a nasty, destructive rot, but one that shrivels and concentrates the grapes – not dissimilar to raisins, to explain it simply… hence the name. the wine glints golden in the glass, and has heady and seductive scents of acacia honey, candied lemon peel, star anise, and dried apricots; sip it and enjoy the glorious richness and sweetness of the mellifluous liquid – caramel, orange zest, honey, raisins and hints of cinnamon, dancing across the tongue. I think I've waxed lyrical enough; a glorious finish and a triumph with mince pies, Christmas pud, or chocolate roulade – spot on with blue cheese too.

  • MATCHED WITH MUSCOVADO AND NUTMEG BRULEE WITH PISTACHIO PRALINE - Unctuous, creamy and indulgent, the deep flavours of the muscovado sugar add a layer of intensity to this dessert. This is where similarly unctuous, seductively rich dessert wines come to the fore. D’Arenberg The Noble Wrinkled Riesling). With heady scents of caramel, Manuka honey and dried apricots, it has a mellifluous richness, with the flavours of raisins, sweet spice and orange zest enhancing the intensity of this dish.
